This programme aims to bring to Edinburgh audiences a national cinema that has virtually no visibility outside its borders. Long associated to violence, drugs and poverty, Colombia, through three contemporary films, reveals the richness of its many cultural identities.

“On Root” starts off with Benkos (Diana Kuellar, 2012), a short documentary that looks at the oral traditions of the palenqueros, descendants of African slaves who live in the Caribbean village of San Basilio de Palenque. The film opens up on three screens, allowing for multiple viewpoints in an installation framed under the theme of “electric city” for this year’s Hidden Door Festival.

Continuing along the northern coastline territories we encounter the diverse music cultures of the Caribbean in The Wind Journeys (Ciro Guerra, 2009). And through the shifting urban landscapes of Cali, we arrive south, fast moving through the city’s underground culture in Hongos (Óscar Ruíz Navia, 2014).

All these films present characters whose sense of belonging is never fixed but in constant transit. Their resilience and unceasing exploration embody the true sense of a national cinema that looks away from hegemonic discourses of representation.

“On Root” opens up different courses for apprehending the multiplicity of this country.
